Ince is a large residential area within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, historically a separate town known as Ince-in-Makerfield, which developed significantly during the Industrial Revolution due to its coal mining and cotton industries.
The area is now essentially a suburb of Wigan, divided into Higher Ince and Lower Ince by a railway line, and while much of its industrial heritage, such as the wagon works and collieries, is gone, it retains a distinct community feel.
In terms of transportation, it is served by the Ince (Manchester) railway station, which offers direct services to Wigan Wallgate and on to Manchester Victoria and Southport on the Manchester-Southport line, and is well-connected by local bus services to Wigan town centre and surrounding areas; for major road links, the proximity to Wigan means excellent access to the M6 motorway and the A580 (East Lancashire Road), with the M61 and M58 motorways also easily reachable from the wider Wigan area.
